Making use of the “fresh start effect”

A new academic year begins this week up and down the country, and as a former school leader and someone heavily involved in coaching and leadership development for schools, I can’t help but share that same sense of anticipation for the academic year ahead (particularly for the school where I am Chair of the local board). There’s research (such as Professor Katy Milkman’s ‘How to Change’) that indicates that dates that feel like new beginnings can support goal initiation.

So if this first week of September is a fresh start for you and you want to consider pursuing change, then you might like to try the Wheel of Life exercise. Click the document below to download a copy. I use it in my coaching to help clients take stock and prioritize what is right for them in current circumstances to act on. Working with a coach to be curious, dig deeper, and hear your thoughts said aloud can be incredibly powerful. If you’d like to have a chat about what coaching can do for you, please get in touch; otherwise, you can work your way through the exercise with some basic prompts on your own.

I wish you well with any fresh starts and all you want to accomplish in the year ahead. Alison
